Historic Downtown Centerville Courthouse

Historic Downtown Centerville, a subsidiary of the Grinders Switch Foundation, will open the doors of the Old Courthouse for the Arts & Ag Tour Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Featured artists at the courthouse will include: Ed’s Backyard Lathe, The Great Toyzini, the Hickman Couty Quilt Guild, textile artist Joann Sadoski, wood turner Norbert Comtois, and wood-worker Daniel Watkins.

A bit of history from nostalgiaville.com has this to say about Hickman County’s Courthouse, “An old log courthouse was built in Vernon, the first county seat. It was torn down and hauled to Centerville when county seat moved. The courthouse was rebuilt in the center of the square. A new brick, two story courthouse was erected in 1845. It was destroyed by Confederates March 12, 1866. The third courthouse, shown in the picture above, was rebuilt in 1867-’68 using same brick walls.”

The Arts & Ag Tour will be the first of many artistic and cultural events to be held at the Old Courthouse. Plans are in the works for a complete renovation of the building after which the city will use it as a cultural arts center. For more information on the renovation project please see www.GrindersSwitch.org
